Founded in Michigan in 1928, the Flint Institute of Arts (FIA) proudly holds the rank of the second largest art museum in the state and runs one of the largest museum art schools in the entire nation. Demonstrating the power of the visual arts, the FIA provides lifelong learning opportunities to engage and educate an ever-growing diverse and regional audience.

Dedicated to making art available, approachable, and accessible to everyone, we offer a broad range of interpretive programs that allow people to access information on the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions that reach more than 160,000 people each year. This includes guided tours, lectures and community dialogues, art classes, workshops, and studio demonstrations. Also, every weekend from September through June, we screen independent films presented by the Friends of Modern art whose selections are tailored to reach all audiences.

For well over a decade, the FIA has participated in supporting Michigan Radio. Through sponsorship, Michigan Radio has generously shared its vast audience of dedicated listeners with us.

“Over the past several years, the staff has worked hard to reshape the FIA’s role in the community and the success we’ve experienced would not have been possible without our ongoing relationship with Michigan Radio and its listeners,” expressed John B. Henry, Executive Director of the FIA.

The station of choice of many patrons and an effective component to our advocacy, Michigan Radio helps the FIA to fulfill our mission statement: to advance the understanding and appreciation of art for all through collections, exhibitions, and educational programs.

Thank you, Michigan Radio.

Looking Beyond Ratings

Marketing professionals, like gourmet chefs, are on the lookout for key ingredients when they are planning their strategy.

Specifically, when buying radio, those in the know are looking at things like reach, frequency and ratings.

Michigan Radio has the numbers that the professionals are looking for. As the most listened-to public radio station in the state, we reach more than a half a million listeners per week with our on-air broadcast – and that’s not counting our streaming or web audience.

Beyond the ratings, marketers today know they should also be looking at audience engagement. Put simply, audience engagement = how much the audience takes action as a result of the content produced by the station.

Taking action or audience engagement could look like:

  • social media interaction: liking, sharing, commenting on content;

  • web interaction: commenting on stories on the web or going to the web to follow up on a story they heard on-air;

  • calling the station with feedback;

  • contacting sponsors or advertisers;

For Michigan Radio, audience engagement also includes listeners who become donors/members of the station.  This is the ultimate in audience engagement: our listeners value our content enough to contribute financially.

This means that sponsorship messages aired and associated with our high-quality content, are HEARD by our audience.  Since we don’t have commercials and limit our sponsorship messages to only a few an hour, our listeners don’t change the station during sponsorship messages.

As a marketing professional, we know that you recognize the value in what Michigan Radio sponsorship has to offer – contact us to find out how to put your marketing dollars to work in our high-quality, content-rich environment!

Industry Spotlight: Arts & Culture

A Michigan Radio Sponsorship gives you access to an audience that is educated, affluent and engaged. Our listeners are 173% more likely to attend an art gallery or art show and 214% more likely to contribute towards the arts, meaning your message will reach an audience that has both an interest in what you have to offer and the ability to support your programs.

Creating a Marketing Plan

Here we are in December, with a busy year ahead of us!  Are you planning for success in 2018? A marketing plan is essential to building your business, providing a guideline for your goals and strategies and a document to analyze your success at the end of the year.

As you consider your marketing plan, there are a few questions to be considered:

  • General vs. Specific – Are you trying to build general awareness or do you want to promote a specific event or product?

  • Audience – Who are you trying to reach? Where do they live?  Are they affluent, educated? What are their buying habits?

  • Budget – How much have you allocated to marketing and growing your business?

Once you’ve built your plan, let us help you meet your goals!

We can customize a campaign to focus the attention on a specific product or event, or we can build a branding campaign to build awareness for your company.

With a Michigan Radio Sponsorship, you will reach our highly-coveted audience of affluent, educated and engaged Michiganders across the bottom half of the state.

Converting Obstacles to Opportunities: No Political Ads = Less Competition

2018 is a mid-term election year.

As a listener, we’re sure you know that Michigan Radio is a reliable, unbiased news source for political and election coverage.  This results in a significant uptick in listener engagement and visits to our website in election years.

When you are weighing your options for your marketing budget, remember that Michigan Radio does NOT air political ads.  This means that YOUR message does not have to compete with the loud, obtrusive and aggressive political messaging that you’ll hear on other stations.

Though your impressions and reach will be higher in an election year, our prices do not increase – which means more bang for your buck.  You also won’t have to compete against politicos for your ideal schedule.

Your Michigan Radio Sponsorship & The Flint Water Crisis

From Stephen Schram, Michigan Radio Executive Director and General Manager

 The Flint water crisis has evolved from a compelling and serious statewide story that has catapulted to national impact in the last several months, with coverage in The New York Times, Time Magazine, and even Rolling Stone, as well as national TV news shows.

Michigan Radio has been bringing this story to our listeners across the state from the very beginning, including the city’s 2014 water supply switch to the Flint River and the first reports of lead in the drinking water last July.

Our Michigan Radio reporters — Lindsey Smith, Steve Carmody, Rebecca Williams, Kate Wells and others, have also been explaining the story to listeners nationwide on NPR nationally distributed programs such as All Things Considered, Here & Now, The Diane Rehm Show, and On Point.  On national cable channels, our coverage and reporters have been part of stories on MSNBC and live interviews, with Michigan Radio’s Lindsey Smith featured on The Rachel Maddow Show. Many local public radio stations across the country have also incorporated Michigan Radio’s Flint coverage into their news programs and website content feeds.

As a valued corporate sponsor of Michigan Radio, you help to provide the resources that make this high quality, in-depth coverage possible. In return for your sponsorship, you benefit from higher levels of exposure for your brands and events.

Michigan Radio’s web stream has seen more activity in recent months, with January’s traffic posting 20% growth in unique (non-duplicated) session connections, compared to last year’s monthly average. Our reliable and growing audio stream, which is provided free to all without paywall, hosts listeners across Michigan and all over the world who hear our news reporting and YOUR corporate support messages, read live by our hosts.  In addition, has seen a growing surge in visitors, resulting in YOUR webtile receiving record numbers of impressions.  In January 2016 alone, our total impression for sponsored webtiles, grew nearly 200% from the fourth quarter average of 2015.  January’s record impression traffic of 4,367M is really making an “impression” for your tile messaging.

If you’re not currently a sponsor of Michigan Radio but have been considering it, the time has never been better.

Your support will help us continue and expand the coverage that our listeners have come to expect, not only due to the Flint Water Crisis, but for all the stories that we cover now and will enterprise in the months ahead – all focused on Michigan. In return, your message will be seen and heard in our high-quality, content-rich environment, giving you the exposure and ‘halo’ that you’ve been looking for.
